Active Living Every Day behavior-change program - Feb. 8

Mon, Feb 8, 2010 10 a.m. and 6:45 p.m.

Discover how to fit physical activity into your life by making simple lifestyle changes.

Attend one of two free orientation sessions to learn about “Active Living Every Day,” a 12-week behavior-change program developed by The Cooper Institute. The program helps sedentary people and those who struggle to fit exercise into their day to become and stay physically active.

Orientation sessions are Monday, Feb. 8 at either 10 a.m. or 6:45 p.m. at the Baptist East/Milestone Wellness Center, 750 Cypress Station Drive near the Mall St. Matthews. Classes begin Monday, Feb. 15 at either 10 a.m. or 6:45 p.m.

“This program is for people who need support to get going – to get moving,” said Diane Kelton, Wellness Center president.

Glenda Wagner, a certified Active Living instructor and program graduate, will teach the classes. The 54-year-old Wagner lost 64 pounds in the Wellness Center’s HMR® Healthy Solutions program which she started in October 2008, then enrolled in the Active Living program in March 2009.  “The Active Living program helped me to make many positive changes in my life.” Wagner said. “I hope I can take my experience and help others.”

The program is based on research which shows that 30 minutes of moderate activity on most days can improve health and that you are more likely to become and stay physically active if taught certain lifestyle skills. For instance, taking short walks during breaks at work or using the stairs instead of the elevator are ways to incorporate exercise into your daily life.

Program costs are $120 for members (plus $30 book for the book), Active Living Partners Web site access, a weekly class meeting, follow-up fitness specialist appointment and weekly coaching time with Wagner.

Non-members pay $285 (in three payments of $95) plus $30 for the book. Their package includes the member benefits plus a three-month Wellness Center membership, and two fitness specialist appointments. If paying in full, non-members will receive a $20 discount.

To register, or for more information on program costs, call (502) 753-7552 or e-mail gwagner@baptistmilestone.com. Enrollment is limited.

The Cooper Institute was founded in 1970 by Dr. Kenneth H. Cooper, author of the bestseller “Aerobics.” The Dallas-based organization focuses on exercise and wellness to prevent disease.
