“The Clinic at Walmart,” operated by Baptist Hospital East, now open
Baptist Hospital East’s first in-store clinic in the Bashford Manor Walmart to bring affordable healthcare to thousands of Metro Louisville residents
On Dec. 21, 2009, Walmart and Baptist Hospital East announced Louisville’s newest offering of healthcare services – “The Clinic at Walmart” operated by Baptist Hospital East. This convenient care clinic opened Dec. 21 in the Walmart located at 2020 Bashford Manor Lane. The clinic provides fast, affordable access to basic healthcare services such as check-ups, immunizations, screenings and minor injuries. The walk-in health clinic is the first to be owned and operated by Baptist East; the second to be operated by a Baptist Healthcare System Inc. hospital in a Kentucky Walmart. The clinic is open for walk-in service seven days a week – 8:30 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday; 8:30 a.m.-6:30 p.m. on Saturday and 11:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. on Sunday.
The clinic, which is staffed by an advanced practice nurse, has two exam rooms. “Get Well” services range from suture removal ($35) and tobacco cessation counseling ($30) to dog or cat bites ($57) and influenza ($77). “Stay Well” services include lab tests such as a pregnancy test ($25) and drug screen ($45); examinations such as hearing tests ($47); and shots/vaccinations such as tetanus ($45) and meningococcal meningitis ($112).* A complete list of services and prices is posted at the clinic. Several types of private insurance – such as Humana, Anthem, Bluegrass Family Health, Cigna, Aetna, United HealthCare (among others) – will be accepted, along with Medicare and Medicaid.
For busy customers who are seeking affordable, accessible healthcare, especially during evening hours or on weekends, clinics play a key role in the healthcare system. These clinics can help keep people out of overcrowded emergency rooms – 10 to 15 percent of clinic customers surveyed said they would have used an emergency room had the clinic in Walmart not been available, while another 5 to 10 percent would have gone without treatment entirely, potentially leading to more serious complications down the road.**
“By joining with Walmart to operate ‘The Clinic at Walmart,’ Baptist Hospital East is one step closer to bringing quality healthcare to our community in a convenient way and at a convenient location,” said President Sue Stout Tamme. “Our clinic, staffed with licensed healthcare providers even on nights and weekends, will be another low-cost alternative for families whose busy schedules work best when no appointment is required. This will also help take the pressure off of our emergency room, which is one of the busiest in the state.”
These limited-service walk-in clinics join the familiar Baptist Health family of healthcare providers – Baptist Hospital East, Baptist Hospital Northeast (La Grange) and affiliated facilities such as Baptist Eastpoint, Baptist BodyScan, Baptist Urgent Care/Prompt Care, Baptist Medical Associates and BaptistWorx®. This network of services, encircling the Metro Louisville area, offer convenience and comfort, along with the high-touch and high-tech treatment for which Baptist is known.
“We are constantly looking for ways to add value for our customers and, with this clinic, we hope to provide Louisville customers with affordable, accessible and convenient healthcare,” said Bruce Shepard, Walmart’s director of health business development. “And because Baptist is a well-known and respected healthcare provider in the community, our customers will benefit from the convenience of prompt, professional care from an organization that they know and trust.”
In addition to enhancing the ‘one-stop shopping’ experience for customers, The Clinic at Walmart offers prompt access to affordably priced acute and preventive care for common health ailments treatable without urgent or emergency care, including sore throats, sinus infections, upper respiratory infections, earaches, bladder infections, insect bites and stings, cholesterol screening, blood sugar testing, vaccinations, drug screening and routine physicals.
With the opening of this clinic, there will be 49 in-store clinics in Walmart stores across 13 states. For further information about “The Clinic at Walmart”, please visit www.walmart.com/clinics.
* Prices are subject to change. Prices will be posted at each clinic location.
** Survey results based on an exit survey of 14,479 patients following visits to a clinic in Walmart between January 2006 and November 2006. Surveys were conducted by the clinic operators.
